Donating Books to the Research Library

Do you have books that no longer bring you joy, and you wish to re-home them?
Stack of Books

The LANL Research Library is a predominantly electronic library, obtaining ebooks and ejournals to maximize efficient access to important scientific and technical resources. However, we do occasionally add donated print material to our physical collection if it fits our collection development needs (primarily STEM subjects) and is not available online.

The following types of items will not be accepted as donations:

  • Technical reports
  • Fiction books
  • Dictionaries
  • Textbooks
  • Computer manuals
  • Political science publications
  • Previously withdrawn Research Library books
  • Journals already owned by the library in electronic or print format

If you have items you would like to donate, please fill out a short form.

Library staff will schedule a date and time for you to drop off any donations. Any gifted books must be delivered to the J.R. Oppenheimer Study Center (TA-3) building.

For books to be gifted, an appointment with a staff member is required; drop-off donations without an appointment will not be accepted.

Donated books that are not added to our collection are made available to all as free books, donated to Internet Archive, or recycled. Items donated to the library will not be returned.

Information on book donations can also be found on our Policies webpage.
