    Placing Holds

Library materials constitute Laboratory property and Lab employees and contractors are personally responsible for materials checked out to them until materials are cleared from their circulation record. Due to a limited book budget, lost items must be replaced by providing the Library with:

    1. A replacement copy
    2. A cost center/program code so that we can replace the item.
    Lost, damaged, or missing items

Replacement of Research Library items that are lost, damaged beyond repair, or stolen is the responsibility of the patron. Charge codes will be requested by Library staff and used to replace the item with an exact copy or a relevant item of equal or lesser value.

    Retiree Borrowing Program

The Research Library offers a program to Laboratory retirees allowing them to have limited access to library materials. For more information, see the Retiree Borrowing Program page.

    Employee-only services

The following services are only available to Laboratory employees.

    Borrowing materials from other libraries

The Research Library provides an Interlibrary Loan service free of charge to LANL employees. We can often borrow books from other libraries that you need that we do not have in our collection.

    Photocopies

The Research Library provides copy service for articles found within the collection free of charge. Staff can also order articles not found in the collection when provided with appropriate cost codes.

    Self-Service Copying

Lab staff may copy for laboratory business at no cost. There are several photocopy machines available throughout the library for Lab staff use.

    In-House Scanning Services

Research Library staff can scan articles found in the collection free of charge. Filling a request may take up to 7 days. All copies are sent as PDF email attachments. All copies comply with copyright laws and regulations.

    External requests

Requests that cannot be filled in-house may be obtained from our external vendor provided that the customer supplies correct cost information. Be sure to include your group cost code information when ordering. Most requests are filled within 24 hours; difficult-to-find items may take up to several weeks. All copies are sent as PDF email attachments. All copies comply with copyright laws and regulations.

    Requesting materials

The Research Library can order journal articles, conference papers and book chapters not found in the Library collection for LANL staff. The service is provided by our vendor, Reprints Desk, who will mail the article to you as a PDF. Easily retrieved articles may be delivered the same day, while harder-to-find material can take several days/weeks.

You can request materials via the Request Form, by calling us at (505) 667-5809, or by emailing us.

Interlibrary Loan items are not sent via interoffice mail, they must be picked up from the Research Library.
